AI chatbots for customer service: costs, benefits and limits

Short answerAn AI chatbot can answer routine customer questions instantly, 24/7. Costs are usually charged per conversation or per resolved question. For example, Zendesk lists $1.50–$2.00 per automated resolution, while a custom chatbot has a setup fee plus AI usage. The limits matter as much as the benefits: chatbots can state wrong information, and a tribunal has held a business responsible for what its chatbot said.

What an AI chatbot does well

  • Instant answers, any hour. Hours, pricing ranges, shipping, returns and service areas, at 2 a.m. on a Sunday.
  • Consistency. The same correct answer every time, from information you approved.
  • Lead capture. It collects name, need and contact details while the visitor is interested.
  • Freeing your team from the same twenty questions, so they can handle the conversations that need a person.

What AI chatbots cost in 2026

There are two common routes:

RouteHow you payBest for
Help-desk platform add-onPer automated resolution. Zendesk lists $1.50 (committed) to $2.00 (pay-as-you-go), with a small allowance included per agent seatTeams already using that help desk
Custom chatbotOne-time setup, plus AI usage that scales with conversationsBusinesses wanting their own brand voice, website integration and booking

Zendesk figures are as reported by eesel (October 2026), and individual contracts can differ. Whichever route you take, budget your own time too: someone has to keep the chatbot's knowledge up to date.

The limit every owner should know about

In February 2024, British Columbia's Civil Resolution Tribunal ruled against Air Canada after its website chatbot told a customer he could apply for a bereavement fare refund after travel, which contradicted the airline's actual policy. The airline argued the chatbot was responsible for its own words. The tribunal disagreed: a company is responsible for all the information on its website, chatbot included, and it ordered Air Canada to pay roughly CA$650 plus interest and fees (American Bar Association).

The lesson isn't "avoid chatbots." It's this: a chatbot must only say what you'd be happy to stand behind.

How to deploy a chatbot safely

  1. Use approved sources only. Train it on your real FAQs, policies and price lists, not the open internet.
  2. Tell it what not to answer. Refunds, legal, medical and anything not in its sources go to a person.
  3. Always offer a human. A clear handoff by chat, ticket, call-back or email.
  4. Test with real questions, including tricky and rude ones, before launch.
  5. Review conversations monthly and fix answers that confused customers.
  6. Be upfront that customers are chatting with an AI assistant.

Chatbot, AI receptionist or live chat?

Use a chatbot for website and messaging questions, an AI receptionist for phone calls, and live chat when your team can respond within minutes and you want the personal touch. Many businesses combine all three, with the AI handling routine questions and passing the rest to people.

Our AI chatbot development service builds chatbots trained only on your approved information, with human handoff built in, and our AI integration services connect it to your help desk, CRM or store.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a customer service chatbot cost?

Help-desk add-ons are often charged per automated resolution (Zendesk lists $1.50–$2.00). Custom chatbots usually have a one-time setup fee plus AI usage costs that grow with your conversation volume.

Can a chatbot give wrong answers?

Yes. That's why a good chatbot answers only from approved information, says when it doesn't know, and hands off to a person. Businesses can be held responsible for what their chatbot tells customers.

Will customers know they're talking to a bot?

They should. Being upfront builds trust and avoids frustration, and it's good practice to introduce the chatbot as an AI assistant.
